Renaissance Walls, Modern Stage

The Mura di Lucca are a Renaissance fortification roughly 4.2 km long, encircling the entire historic centre. Construction of the modern ramparts began in 1504 and was completed in 1645, a project spanning 140 years. Built to resist artillery, the walls feature a low, thick profile up to 30 metres wide at the base and eleven large bastions; they were never tested in battle, which helped preserve them as among the best-kept urban fortifications in Europe.

In the early 19th century, under Duchess Maria Luisa di Borbone, the walls were converted from defensive structure into the Passeggiata delle Mura, a tree-lined public promenade. In summer, stretches of the ramparts — notably the former Campo Balilla bastion — become the overflow venue of the Lucca Summer Festival, hosting concerts of up to around 40,000 spectators. The Rolling Stones drew ~55,000 here in 2017, followed by Roger Waters, Bruce Springsteen and other major headliners.

How to Reach the Walls

• Train — Lucca station is just outside the walls, 5–10 minutes from the main access ramps near Porta San Pietro and Baluardo San Colombano.
• By car — A11 motorway, Lucca Est; cars must be left in lots outside the walls.
• On foot — the historic centre is a short walk; the Passeggiata delle Mura is pedestrian-only.
